BSD Hann.Munden out of order catching up

2 July Hann.Munden

A very very hot and dehydrating uphill ride to Hann.Munden It is almost
the final day of riding on the continent as we now head, via Aachen, to
Bruges for a break before cycling to Rye from Dover. A celebratory wine has
been aquired as the observant reader will already know.

The hotel we booked has a technical problem with their net connection in the
rooms so I do not know if this will go out today as planned. When it goes
out we will also try and post the latest flickr pics.

Here is a link to the wiki on this interesting town with an interesting
history of its name.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hann._M%C3%BCnden

The story of the name is in itself interesting as well as the fairy tale
book collection of houses etc.

To cool off a bit we went to the Dom here. As a 15th century gothic it is
cool inside. Interesting too. Another of the Evangelical Lutheren house of
worship – we are just about due west of Lutherstadt on the Elbe and our
gentle readers will remember the stories of that city, our launch pad to
Potsdam and Berlin.

The town does indeed, as the Wiki artlcle says, have hundreds of the Weser R
houses from the 17th century but also has house dated from 1450 or so;
probably not the original. Their 850 year celebration starts on the 4th.
One can take only so much cuteness before needing a beer.

Dinner will be a break. Muscli, fruit, and yorgurt and cheese and some
smoked trout, with our wine, all as a in room picnic.

BSD Bad Karlshafen date out of order

1 July Bad Karlshafen No internet connection here, will send this next
time have one and will upload the flickr pics as well

Left early as today was to be very hot and, in a good way, with very low
wind, but all uphill. Wanted to get to this 'Bad' town before the high
heat, usually late afternoon and early evening.

Immediately out of Holzminden we saw a bicycle driving school. Roads,
traffic lanes, intersections, just like a real area only in miniature. Have
not seen this before. QB has a picture that will be uploaded to the flickr
site, especially now that all can see.

On the way we passed the schloss at Covey. One section is a wine
distributor. Apparently the owner likes to collect better wines, mostly
French, as well as some of the food trappings. I mentioned to the sales
person that the wine looked good but we are on bikes and a full bottle is a
bit much for the way we travel. No problem. She directed us to the
section called Rad Fahren, bike riders, where they were selling .25l bottles
with screw caps. Just perfect. We bought two and will drink them this
evening.

The summer season must be strarting in earnest. Many more bike riders and
tourists arriving in the campgrounds. Of course this is a recreational
area. The Fairy Tale Road. The Grimm brothers spent 30 years in Kassel
( we reach Kassel after Hann.Munden stop) collecting stories about this
area. Hills, forests, rivers, cliffs, trolls. The "road" from Bremen to
Kassel and then down south almost to Frankfurt am Main is called the Fairy
Tale Road.

Stopped for some ice cream along the river bank and once again the pricing
disparity between water (water, beer, coffee) and all else. Three scoops
of ice cream 1.50 euro One small glass of mineral water 1.80 Coffee is
almost always more than a Wurst with a roll. The only inexpensive place to
get drinks is at the gas stations. Cold drinks in large plastic bottles.
Generally cannot be obtained cold in stores or markets.

The "Bad" town has a thermal Bad unlike others we have visited. Same up
scale facility with restaurants, cafes, small store, and nice building.
This one was more elaborate. Has 1000 lockers for day users. As usual no
instructions in any language on how to navigate through the changing area.
When one enters one sees the 1000 lockers out in the open. You put your
card into a slot inside the locker and it dispenses a key on a watch band.
However, where to change. Well I found out afterwards not in the open!
There are changing rooms, a bit hidden, and you then put your stuff into a
locker.

Entering the pool area one finds atleast 8 different pools ranging in temp
from 32C to 36C and at 3%, 5% and 12% natural salt coming from the source
about 1000 m up the hill. Each pool is big enough to swim in and several
have outside tunnels that connect. The mens shower area, the inside
dressing one, has 15 showers plus two or three for various states of being
disabled. In short a big place with lots of choice but no real hot tub as
I would like it.

Tried and experiment. Floating at 3% salt and my feet dragged to the
bottom. At 5% they hung at 35-45 degrees, bareable. At 12% toes were
exposed and I drifted off until my head bumped the side.

There is also a Sauna area, I did not pay for it as it was hot enough
already, that has five different temparture Saunas, mud baths, and three
different increasingly hot steam rooms. This area appears to be clothing
optional. One central area to lounge around and drift off into the rooms
for a bit of the "Kur".

Hope to find some French influence in the cooking tonight. When the
Huggenots were expelled from France in the 17th Century they came to this
area as well. Gentle readers may remember the role of Fredrick II mentioned
earlier around the Potsdam portion of the trip. If not clear on German
geography (one learns quite a bit about it on a bike) a map might help place
the tail of the Weser and the section just East of the Elbe.

BSD Antwerp

4 July

A very different 4th. No chilli and no friends at the excellent pool party.

Did have a bike ride up the Fulda, just a few hours and then we got a car and drove to Antwerp.

Moin has been discussed in a separate thread. It is more of a greeting, especially in the morning but used all day. Not a goodby or adieu. Sometimes moin moin. The closest is the Bavarian Gruss Gott.

Antwerp is a true European city. Cafes, people dressed, people strolling, packed cafes, diversity of residents and tourists. Good architecture too with a large old Gothic Dom.

Just finished an almost perfect french style fish stew with some decent rouille. What a change!! Actually we shared it to leave room for the rabbit stew with plums made in Tappist beer and Cannard in a cherry beer. Belgians have about 280 different beers. Hmm. 5 a day for x days.

Bad Hann.Munden 2

3 July

A hot and humid day. Spent most of the morning and early afternoon trying to figure out how to leave here. Not easy as we are running out of days to get to Bruges, have time to spend there, and then bike to Rye and onto London where meet up with Bobby and Judi.

Wanted to go to Aachen by train and then bike from there. Nope. Long hard train trip with many changes and required bike reservations. Ok, got that worked out and found out that there is a Messe, trade show, there and only hotel available was 379 euro. Nope.

Back to computer and train station. Liege anyone? Nope, 8 hour trip with no ability in Germany to reserve bike places on IC trains in another country.

Gave up. Got our money back and will rent a car from Kassel, we can bike there tomorrow, and drive to Antwerp. Bike to Bruges after a short stay on the cobbles (we have been there before).

Hann.Munden may be the most story book town on the Weser, actually at the confluence of the Werra and Fulda. We take the Fulda, yesterday's photo from the hotel room, to Kassel.

We have been enjoying the contrast provided by Libby's Shanghai – Beijing tour and the small towns here where the typical size is less than 20K people. Sometimes we look before crossing a street.

Libby's latest reminds me of the similar street crossing traffic and commercial versus governmental of Saigon and Hanoi.

There is now a lovely thunderstorm outside our window. We have not had a day biking in the rain, except for quick showers, since the first week of the trip. Amazing.

BSD Holzminden

30 June

Some photo progress today. Several wrote that the flickr pictures were not
reachable. Now fixed. Some sort of strange permission problem. New
photos, just a few, up loaded.

After this note will add the photos from the BB.

Fun ride today mostly along the Weser. Nice stop for coffee. Ride was more
hilly as the landscape has definitely changed.

Our rear view mirror turns out to be a great conversation starter. For 30
plus years we have traveled with these and for the whole time, in each
country, we get stopped and asked about them. It has been the best ice
breaker with strangers we have found. Today was no exception and led to
them trying on my glasses.

Speaking of ice, the difficulty of getting it in a glass of water. I know
the German word for table water and have ordered it successfully quite a few
times. I know the word for ice cubes. Cannot seem to get them in the
table water. Somehow the conjunction, at least as I can do it, ends up
with mineral water with one ice cube or ice cubes with no water. It is as
if they only understand selling water at a cafe or dinner restaurant – even
when we are ordering a full meal. Must be me but it always turns out
interesting.

Speaking of interesting, try ordering cake for dessert. Cake is served
late afternoon with coffee. It is a ritual. There is generally cake left
over at most cafes and restaurants but getting it with coffee as a dessert
is a challenge. They understand me perfectly on this issue but it just does
not compute. We like these cultural oddities.

We are still in Moin country. Not sure when or where it will end.

BSD Hamlen

June 28, 2008, Hameln – words with pictures separate

Excellent ride to Hameln, the town of the creepy fairy tale. The landscape
was hills (about 100 meters) on one side of the river and a flat valley on
the side we cycled. Good views, good quality road and many others also
sacking; fortunately they left some for us.

Our sponser has returned. Be sure to buy some tea as the US stock market has
tanked.
Sponsored by Tip Top Tea (The Tea of Record). Try our Weser Blend and
listen to it pop.

George- please note the hotel we are at in Hamlen is called Jungendstil and
is decorated mostly in arts and crafts with several Klimpts on the wall.
The stuffed chair does look a bit Victorian (although the upholstery looks
like Wm. Morris) to us as does the four poster bed sans posts.

On the road we encountered a full timbered bench, pic. Entering Hameln one
sees the rat on the bridge (pic). At the market we saw a Shauenspiel, a
reenactment of the Pied Piper story with little kids as the rats and middle
sized kids as the city folks (pic). Shared a bratwurst as we had not had
one in a while and QB was in withdrawal.

The town, unsurprisingly, is as cute as one would expect it to be. Lots of
alleys to explore, old buildings (saw one dated 1500 ) in good restored
condition. Each alley more interesting than the previous. QB took MANY MANY
pictures, could not help herself. These are on on Flickr. KB took a few
on the cell phone and will post those on this blog right after this entry.

The church was partially destroyed during WWII and now restored with an old
and new section. Heard the big organ rehearsing. Bass a bit too big for
the space.
