Tom and I used to meet in the food hall every time I came to Japan. The main difference that I noticed now is the lack of free samples that we always got at many many counters.
Sharon‘s questioning if that is a post Covid reaction. Sounds like a good theory to me.

On the Takashimaya samples issue, it may be a matter of timing. Yes, there was a cut back on offering samples during Covid advisories, but on my last couple of visits I know I was offered samples; between the last 2 Japan visits I went to Takashimayas in Kyoto, Tokyo Nihombashi, and Tokyo Shinjuku and spent time in the food dungeons where there were samples available, usually by wandering staff with trays of offerings.
